Training to become a Feldenkrais Practitioner

There are many places around the world where one can train to become a Feldenkrais Practitioner. Trainings that follow the guidelines set down by the three Training Accreditation Boards (European, North American and Australian) are accredited, and their graduates are entitled to use terms like Feldenkrais Method®, that are controlled by service marks. The guidelines ensure breadth and quality in the training process, and are a basis for professionalism and consistency in the Method.

Most acredited trainings meet for eight weeks each year, for four years. The teaching staff are drawn from an internationally-agreed roster of Trainers and Assistant Trainers; there will usually be experienced practitioners who visit the Training as well. The resulting community of students, staff and visiting practitioners is a rich and exciting opportunity for learning at many levels and across several 'generations', as it were, of the Feldenkrais community.

Within the UK, there have been five trainings that have completed so far, starting with the London training, 1987-1990; subsequent trainings have been held in the Sussex towns of Lewes and Ditchling. The organiser of all these has been the Feldenkrais International Training Centre, led by, Garet Newell. They are currently planning a new training to begin July 2010; for more information, contact them by telephone on 01273 844 140 or look at their website: www.feldenkrais-itc.com.

Another training is being planned for London, to begin in the autumn of 2011; this will be led by Elizabeth Beringer and organised by Scott Clark at Feldenkrais London. Contact him through his website: www.feldenkraislondon.com.

A complete list of all accredited Trainings in Europe and Israel may be found on the EuroTAB (European Training Accreditation Board) website, with contact details: EuroTAB.

Introduction to the Feldenkrais Method by Elizabeth Beringer and David Zemach-Bersin
Two-volume CD set; six lessons (spread over 4 discs) in each volume.
£26.50 (includes p&p) for each of the two volumes.
Both beginners and those with experience, regardless of age or ability, will enjoy these lessons. Explanation of the theory and practice of the Feldenkrais Method is interwoven throughout the series, making it one of the most accessible introductions available.

Embodied Learning: Focus on Knees & Ankles by Elizabeth Beringer
Two volumes, each of four CD's; eight lessons in each volume.
£27.00 (includes p&p) for each of the two volumes.
Themes include: distributing effort through the legs in order to reduce strain on particular joints, improving the flexibility of the hips for healthier knees and ankles, how overall posture affects the knees, and how to reduce chronic tension that interferes with comfortable movement. The lessons in the first series are basic and gentle, and are especially appropriate for those recovering from an injury; no prior experience with the Feldenkrais Method is necessary. The lessons in the second series are more complex, and prior experience of ATM would be useful.

Embodied Learning: Focus on the Hips & Low Back by Elizabeth Beringer
Four CD's, a total of eight lessons.
£26.50 (includes p&p).
Emphasises the way in which healthy movement of the back complements healthy movement of the hips. The lessons begin simply and increase in complexity through the series. The ability to sit cross legged is one of the movements focused on, so these tapes are particularly relevant for those wishing to sit 'tailor' fashion or in a lotus position more comfortably. This series is oriented towards those with prior experience with the Feldenkrais Method.

Embodied Learning: Focus on Breathing by Elizabeth Beringer
Four CD's, a total of eight lessons.
£28.50 (includes p&p).
How we breathe effects the quality of our life. This series leads you through important aspects of healthy breathing so you can create fuller and more comfortable breathing.

Easy Hands and Arms by Cliff Smyth
Three volumes CD series; four lessons in each volume.
£21.00 (includes p&p) for each of the three volumes.
Cliff Smyth developed this series based on his own experience of injury and recovery, as well as his work with people with overuse injuries and hand and arm pain (e.g. RSI, carpal tunnel, thoracic outlet syndrome, etc). The focus of these lessons is on becoming aware of how dynamic support from the entire skeleton can support the movement of our shoulders arms and hands.

Sitting Series by Scott Clark
Two CD's, a total of twenty short lessons.
£17.00 (includes p&p).
These lessons are all done in a sitting position, and form a comprehensive introduction to the possibilities of movement, awareness and comfort in sitting. They are quite like the lessons you might do in a Feldenkrais group class, but shorter. Although they are designed primarily for people who have already done ATM classes or individual lessons, who want something to help them remember and build on their experience, they will be helpful as well to those who do not have easy access to a Feldenkrais teacher; they may also serve as samples, indications of what to expect from a Feldenkrais class.

Living in Gravity with Ralph Strauch
One DVD.
£27.00 (includes p&p)
A half-day workshop in which you will rediscover your natural balance and ease and fluiidity of movement by gaining greater awareness of your support from the ground. You will explore balance in sitting, standing and walking and in the transition between them.

Finding Centre and Ground with Ralph Strauch
One CD.
£9.00 (includes p&p)
Your felt experience of centre -— referred to as your Tan T'ien by the Chinese and your Hara by the Japanese — contributes to your sense of self as a competent physical being, comfortable with your place in the world. Your experience of support from the ground does also. These two lessons put you back in touch with those experiences, and in so doing, help you become who you really are.

The Busy Person's Guide to Easier Movement by Frank Wildman
£6.00 (includes p&p)
Fifty ways to achieve a healthy, happy and intelligent body.
